Update

AMFA representatives recently visited the Atlanta and Orlando stations. We understand that these visits have stirred concerns regarding the seniority integration of the IBT-represented AirTran technicians and Southwest technicians. This message is to update you on the IBT’s perspective on these issues.

  1. The IBT has been in contact with AMFA. We have not yet been able to schedule a meeting with AMFA representatives, however, and not for lack of diligence on the IBT’s part. If AMFA is willing to be fair in this process, an agreement can be reached that will (1) protect all of AirTran technicians’ seniority, (2) insulate both groups from any potential bumps or other short-term impacts through fencing, and (3) be implemented in a timely manner. If we cannot reach agreement with AMFA, we will arbitrate this matter before a neutral, taking the position that the lists should be dovetailed by date-of-hire seniority.

  2. AMFA cannot simply ignore the results of a seniority arbitration, nor can they erase it by means of a collective bargaining agreement.

  3. We do not anticipate speedy resolution of seniority integration unless an agreement can be reached with AMFA to integrate the lists without an arbitration. Moreover, there is no immediate urgency to integrate the lists, given the timetable of the company’s integration and the fact that seniority integration would not take place until at soonest the conclusion of a single carrier investigation by the National Mediation Board.

We will keep you informed of any developments in this matter.
